Preparandome para el colegio / Getting ready for school

Hace dias que no escribo, que desesperacion! Extraño sentarme a conversar y contarles cositas.

______

It’s been a while since I last wrote, how annoying! I miss being able to sit and tell you all stuff, just stuff that happens at home. So tonight I am taking advantage of the ‘silence’ and am writing to share some ideas and things that have struck me.

Lately I have been thinking about the skills that Tim needs to be able to do for school life. These are simple things that all parents have in mind when their children start this new stage. Among them is to be able to go to the toilet unaided. For that, Tim has a visual routine that helps him remember the steps he needs to follow and with it we are making a lot of progress. We are also very lucky as school has the same visual routine already in place in the girls and boys’ toilets. So I don’t need to worry about that one.

It is also important that he is able to get dressed and again we have a visual timetable to help him remember the order in which he needs to focus on the clothing. He still struggles with socks and with paying attention to what he is doing sometimes but all in all we are improving. With this skill we are also reinforcing that clothes that are taken off should not be thrown on the floor but placed nicely on a chair or table. In school, children need to change for PE classes so that will be a challenge on its own. I do have faith though that by the time comes he will be able to manage almost as well if not just as well as his classmates. A characteristic of children with ASD is that they love routine so once it has been practiced over and over the skills tend to be easier to remember.

Another priority is that he can manage his packed lunch. Slow progress on this one but progress nonetheless, now he only needs help with his juice. It is such a relief to know he can eat on his own now, after all the trouble and stress we went through during his short life I can tell you it is a REEEEELIIIIEEEEEF!!!

It is also important he knows when he is thirsty and to be able to drink from an open cup. And that is why I am preparing what I told you before, the bottle fairy. We are almost ready and should be able to get things rolling next week.

It would be great if all this could be achieved by the time he goes to school in September but am not ambitious, although I will carry on working hard and doing the best I can to push him to make the most of this practice time and am sure we will make headway. J It takes time but we are making progress.
